Some of my favorite moments come fromseeing the interactions between the young and the old.  We have a number of “inter-generational” programs in my church ministry, and they are really important and powerful.  I am a big proponent of such programs for a couple of main reasons:

  1. There is a fear of the elderly in our society, especially of those who are frail.  Of course, this is learned behavior that can be overcome by exposing young people to their elders at an early age.
  2. The old are energized by the young.  For our elderly, there is a real psychological and spiritual benefit to reliving the innocence and wonder of youth. I have seen the positive effects firsthand!

What are you doing to make sure that your aging loved one interacts with the young people in her life? Are there kids or grandkids around?  If not, are there programs in your community that can help?
